Costs I Consider

  • Cost of Materials – such as canvas, paint and varnish mediums.
  • Cost of Operation – such as marketing costs, sales tax, commissions and fees paid.
  • Cost of Labour, Experience, Skill & Service – hourly rate based on years of experience and skill, relative to other artists working in a similar style and format.

Things I Consider When Determining My Hourly Rate:

  • The amount of time and effort invested in study, research and development for honing the knowledge and skills that go into creating high-quality artwork. With more experience and skills, artists charge higher hourly rates. I compare my rate with rates of other artists’ who paint in a similar style of painting to meet the market standards.
  • The objective value offered in stellar customer service, brand value and money-back guarantee.

Therefore:

Original Paintings – Cost of materials and operations plus numbers of hours that went into creating the piece, at a reasonable hourly rate.

Embellished Prints – Base cost determined by the printing platforms plus the number of hours I put into embellishing the print at a reasonable hourly rate.

Prints & Merch – Base cost determined by the printing platforms plus a percentage of royalty for me, the artist, usually 10-15%.
